Prof Del Loewenthal
Del Loewenthal’s career is wide-ranging, spanning existentialism, psychoanalysis, critical psychotherapy, relational psychotherapy, humanism, post-modernism, phototherapy, CBT and childhood studies. Del Loewenthal is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapy and Counselling and Director of the Research Centre for Therapeutic Education at the University of Roehampton, UK and Adjunct Professor at AUT, NZ. He is an existential–analytic psychotherapist (having trained at the Philadelphia Association, London), photographer and chartered psychologist, with a particular interest in phenomenology. His books include: Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling after Post-Modernism: The selected works of Del Loewenthal (2017, Routledge); Post-existentialism and the Psychological Therapies: Towards a Therapy without Foundations (2011, Karnac), Phototherapy and Therapeutic Photography in a Digital Age (2013, Routledge), with Andrew Samuels, Relational Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis and Counselling: Appraisals and reappraisals (2014, Routledge); Critical Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis and Counselling: Implications for practice (2015, Palgrave Macmillan); with Gillian Proctor, Why Not CBT: Against and For CBT 2nd Edition (2018, PCCS Books); and with Evrinomy Avdi, Developments in Qualitative Psychotherapy Research (2019, Routledge). He is also founding editor of the European Journal of Psychotherapy and Counselling (Routledge) and has a private practice in Wimbledon and Brighton.
In the last two years, besides working in the UK, Del has provided workshops and keynotes in: North America, South America, Continental Europe, Africa and Australasia.

He has received Fellowships to Japan, Europe and North America where he carried out a W.K. Kellogg Faculty Fellowship on problem-based learning.
Del has led an EU-funded project on the therapeutic use of photographs in prisons and previously was involved in another EU-funded project on the use of therapeutic photographs in schools. He has also recently worked using photographs for emotional learning with an LGBT group. Current projects include ‘The Kristallnacht Carrier’ (re-enactment phototherapy), explorations of post-truth and phototherapy, and a chapter on ‘The Therapeutic Use of Photography: Phototherapy and therapeutic photography’ for the forthcoming Sage Handbook on Visual Research Methods.
During the Symposium Photo-Therapy Day, Del Loewenthal will be presenting his book Phototherapy and Therapeutic Photography in a Digital Age.
